“I believe science.” Sure, so did the followers of Ptolemy. But the social consensus was wrong; the majority were wrong – including those who claimed to be scientific in their views. The dissident, minority view was right: the Earth is not the centre of the universe.

The majority “knew” the Earth was flat, and knew the Earth was the centre of the universe. And the majority were wrong. They usually are.

It was that way in the time of Socrates, in the time of Copernicus, and in the time of Galileo, and it seems to be the same now.

Thoreau was right: be a majority of one, if need be. Conscience over conformity, and truth over conformity, at all times. Otherwise, life itself becomes a gulag; and we, our own jailers.

And let us remember, when vested interests and the state take over what is called science, and begin to hold a monopoly on it, as has happened in 2020, we no longer have a vital and functioning science, but a return to official doctrines, dogma, and the Inquisition.

Question everything. Examine the evidence for yourself. That is the basis of science; not dogmatism, authoritarianism and group think, parading itself as “science”.

What is even more ominous is when even the generally broad-minded intellectuals begin to attack dissenters. Then you know that we no longer are a society that values science, evidence, freedom, or even reason, all of which require as fundamental, free and open discussion and debate.

That time is now. We have become like the Soviet Union – or totalitarian 21st century China, which we have eagerly emulated – where all dissenting views are rabidly and systematically suppressed.

Welcome to the brave new world.

Think for yourself. The best minds always do.
